Seagull Maritime SWS Guitar in Semi-Gloss – Strong Mellow Tone

The Maritime SWS SG, as with all SWS models, features all solid wood construction with a Select Pressure Tested solid spruce top and solid mahogany back & sides. The Maritime SWS SG also features a semi-gloss Custom Polished Finish with a beautiful satin sheen. This finish provides excellent protection but at the same time is extremely light and elastic. This is a crucial point in both the sound of the guitar and its ability to age - a thick finish muffles a guitar's vibration and blocks aging. The Maritime SWS Folk HG also features a high-gloss Custom Polished Finish. This finish provides excellent protection but at the same time is extremely light and elastic. Mahogany and Spruce Construction Gives This Guitar Strong Tone with a Mellow, Round Midrange

The body of the Seagull Maritime SWS acoustic guitar is solid mahogany and produces a strong sound with an emphasis on a mellow, round midrange. The Maritime SWS also features a solid spruce top, integrated set mahogany neck, chrome hardware, and an Indian rosewood bridge and fretboard. The guitar's high-gloss finish provides excellent protection but at the same time is extremely light and elastic. This is a crucial point in both the sound of the guitar and its ability to age—a thick finish muffles a guitar's vibration and blocks aging.

The Perfect Neck Angle

Neck angle has a tremendous effect on guitar tone. The Seagull re-design served as the impetus for several refinements to Godin’s neck matching technology. Bodies and necks are now matched with incredible precision and the new compound curve in the top provides the additional stability necessary to achieve and maintain optimum neck pitch.

A History of Quality

In 1982 Robert Godin and a few friends produced the first Seagull guitars in the Village of LaPatrie, Quebec. The concept for the Seagull guitar was to take the essential components of the best hand-crafted guitars (such as solid tops and beautiful finishes) and build these features into guitars that could be priced within the reach of working musicians. Of course there is much more to a great guitar than a solid top with a special finish, so we produced this illustrated guide to help you gain some understanding of the basic elements of a great sounding acoustic guitar.

The Seagull story wouldn't be complete without mentioning La Patrie. La Patrie is a small village in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. This is where the first Seagulls were made in the early eighties. Today, La Patrie has a population of about 475 and about half of these people are guitar builders. These folks take a great deal of pride in the guitars they build. Pick one up and you'll see why.

Sitka Spruce Top
Sitka Spruce (Picea sitchensis) grows in a coastal "pocket" from Northern California to Alaska. This dense, straight-grained wood has the highest strength and elasticity-to-weight ratio among available tonewoods, an attribute that makes it an ideal material not only for our soundboards, but for our internal bracing, as well. Sitka produces a slightly brighter tone than does Engelmann.

Sapele Laminate Back/Sides
This exceptional, mahogany-like wood grows throughout the tropical rain forests of Nigeria and the Ivory Coast of Africa. Ever since we introduced it in 1998, its legion of fans has grown exponentially. As a tonewood, it's denser and harder than mahogany, so it has a crisper, clearer, brighter, "pop"-ier sound than its more familiar counterpart. Loud and robust, with a lovely ribboned grain, sapele has been used by Spanish guitar makers for many years.

Dreadnought Body Shape
The original Dreadnought acoustic guitar appeared early in the 20th Century, and its no-frills, no-nonsense shape made it a logical namesake of the huge battleships of that day. Most subsequent Dreadnoughts, including Taylor's, have been derivative of that early design. In 1997, however, Bob Taylor re-designed the Taylor Dreadnought by softening the curves at the top and bottom and generally refining its overall shape. In 2003, gloss-finish Dreadnoughts also underwent bracing refinements that substantially increased their overall volume and bass response, without sacrificing Taylor's signature balance and clarity. Dreadnought six-strings shine as "plectrum" or "rhythm" guitars because they respond well to flatpicking or light-to-heavy strumming.
